Chapter 7: The cursed land Lernaen (part 1)

“Heracles – Gwen – Amelinda -” gentle voice of Lily coming into Heracles’s ears. He woke up, opened his eyes and saw Lily had been standing by the bed’s head, lowering her body looking on them.

“Hi Lily.” he said.

“Dinner is ready. I and my mother will wait for you, Amelinda and Gwen in kitchen.” she said then crept out.

Heracles sat up, looked to the side. Amelinda and Gwen were there, still in deep sleep. He reached on Gwen who was near him most, gently shook him. “Gwen.” he called, “It’s time for dinner.”

Gwen’s moved his body. He woke up.

“Heracles – when did you wake?” asked Gwen.

“Just a minute ago.” replied Heracles.

Gwen took a long yawn, rubbed on eyes then sat up. “I feel really tired. Think I have to sleep more.” he lamented.

“It’s time for dinner Gwen. Lily’s just here to call us. We should hurry up! She and her mother are waiting for us.” said Heracles.

“She did come here?” squealed Gwen.

“Yes, she did.” Heracles answered.

“How long do we sleep?” he asked

“I’m not sure but it must be long time.” said Heracles thoughtfully.

“What do we do now; call her or not? ” said Gwen, looked on Amelinda’s nice face then turned to his friend, Heracles. At moment, Amelinda was sleeping. She was the only girl among them and also the person getting tired most. Gwen felt really hesitated to wake her up. Heracles’s speechless staring at Amelinda’s face then turned to Gwen. “We should wake her up.” he said. He lowered his body near to Amelinda’s ear. “Amelinda – Amelinda” he called gently, “Amelinda.”

Amelinda moved. She opened her eyes seeing Heracles.

“Oh Heracles, Gwen” she said in sweet voice, “You two wake up so early.”

“It’s not early Amelinda. Time for dinner came. Lily just came to call us.” said Heracles.

“She came?” squealed Amelinda, “Where is she?”

“She left.” said Heracles shortly.

“How long did she leave? I don’t want them to wait us long.” she squealed, rushing to get out from the bed.

“Not too long Amelinda, she just left.” said Heracles, calming her down.

“Yes, she just here seconds ago. You do not need it urgently.” added Gwen.

“Really?” said Amelinda, showing down. She turned to them, looking on their faces with her big eyes.

“Yeah!” said Heracles for sure. Amelinda sighed, “I’m afraid they have waited for us so long time but they haven’t. Now let’s go.” she added. Her voice became more relaxed.

“Yes, we go.” Heracles and Gwen replied her.

Then she, Heracles and Gwen walked out, found the way to the kitchen where Lily and her mother were waiting for them. It’s not difficult for them. The room they rested in was the room near to the living most. They got out from it, walked pass two other rooms then stepped in a big kitchen. Lily and her mother Calliope had been there sitting together at a wooden table.

“Poor children! You must be very tired. Come here and have dinner with us.” said aunt Calliope warmly.

“Hurry Amelinda, Heracles, Gwen. I and my mother had prepared for you all a big meal.” added Lily, smiling widely.

Heracles and his friends quickly reached on the table. “Good evening aunt Calliope, Lily.” they said.

“Good evening!” said Lily, smiling.

“Sit down, children.” said Aunt Calliope gently.

Heracles, Amelinda and Gwen made their way pull out chairs and then sat down. “Give me your hands children.” Aunt Calliope spoke again.

Heracles, Amelinda, Gwen looked at the others; they felt confused, not knowing what did Calliope mean.

“Don’t worry. It’s our form before meals.” said Lily quickly. Then she raised her hands up. One reached to her mother, held her hand and the other gave to Heracles who was staying by her. Heracles raised his hands. Imitating her he held hers and Gwen’s hand. Later, all of them held the others’ hands and made a circle. Aunt Calliope and Lily closed their eyes they started muttering.

“Thank god for food and drink you give us. We send thanks to you because you are always by us, protect us, observe, help and forgive us. We also send thanks to you, our Lord. You have protected us in long time and allow us to live comfortably in your place. We very thank to you – our god – our Lord.” They muttered together.

Aunt Calliope and Lily stopped. They opened their eyes and released others’ hands.

“Now we can eat.” Aunt Calliope said, giving all them a pleasant looking.

“Let’s eat, Amelinda, Heracles, Gwen.” said Lily quickly.

“Thank you.” Amelinda replied at one.

“Thanks.” Heracles and Gwen talked together.

It was a fairly hearty meal for Heracles, Gwen and Amelinda now. At least, they saw meat on the table. The thing which attracted them most was a big piece of lamb. It was at middle of the table put in a very large plate with fluffy potatoes, juicy tomatoes and peppers. It emitted the aromas of meat, garlic, sweet onions and orange. Heracles and Gwen stopped at the juicy lamb for second, staring at its glossy outside covered sauce and was steaming. They gulped. Next to it was baked tomatoes stuffed minced meat and herbs inside. Heracles and the others could saw delicious gravy flew out from the baked tomatoes. Then another large plate of beans which were baked with tomatoes and herbs was put next to them. On one side of the table it was a large clay pot of porridge steaming. Some bread was put into a basket then jars of orange jam and honey next to it. Few orange and grapes were put together with a little knife. Heracles, Gwen and Amlinda each one was severed a bow with a spoon, a plate with knife and fork. All of them looked old and unfashionable but to be made of silver.

“Do you like sweetness? Do you like honey? It is best here. I like to eat it.” said Lily happily, “Great to eat it but it’s also good if you eat with some bread.” She smiled, took a look on Heracles and the others then lathered honey on her bread. She bit. “It’s so good. Do you want some?” she suggested.

It is hard to find you” he called up. He hurriedly made the way step down the stairs. Though his body was big and stout, he moved very fast coming to them and froze as he saw a dead on ground. “Who are they?” he asked softly, looking on Amelinda. “This is Lily and - Aunt Calliope.” Amelinda said hesitantly; “She is Lily’s mother. She saved all of us.” she added sadly.  Between curly hair and bushy beard which almost covered his face were warm eyes. She warmly looked on Lily who was sitting on ground holding her mother’s hand.
