Chapter 11: The gate (part 8)

“But it don’t mean he died.” said Aunt Calliope.

“So what happened to him? Why does not he wake up?” squealed Amelinda.

“He was cursed.” she said, “This black fire is the thing which burn soul. Anyone catch it, it will burn their soul till they die. Luckily, spirits of the forest had protected his soul forcing him to stop breathing and prevent the black fire to come his heart. I will put out the fire and then he will wake up.” she said. The she raised her stick closer Gwen’s hand. “Ka-Tha-Ri-Mos.” she spelled. The black fire was extinguished at one. The firefly shaped spirits left Gwen’s wrist scattering to midair then vanished. Gwen’s eyelids twitched. He coughed and then breathed again. He opened eyes and looked at to everyone. “He wakes up. He’s alive.” Amelinda yelled. She smiled happily and hugged on Lily who was by her. Gwen on other hand didn’t understand much. He turned to Heracles, asked by weak voice. “What’s going on? Why does she look so happy?” he said innocently. “We thought we lost you…”

In the time, they were in happy, in pool of black blood belonging to Hydra dragon, bubbles appeared. Blood was like a living creature, rising up, twisting and forming a giant cobra head with blood eyes staring at place Heracles and the others. Then as like an arrow shot out from a bow, it threw itself toward Heracles and Aunt Calliope who were turning back to it. The cobra opened its mouth widely baring it fangs. In second Aunt Calliope felt cold behind neck. She sensed something and turned back. A large mouth red as blood had come very near. “Careful.” She screamed, only could pushed Heracles away. The cobra bit on Aunt Calliope’s shoulder. “Noooooooo.” Lily cried up bitterly. Heralces by someway grabbed on his sword, swung forward and chopped the cobra in two. The cobra head fell down from her shoulder, dropping on ground. It and the other part promptly changed into two smaller cobras and crept away at one. They met the others and combined into one at the end of the hall, stayed at there, wagging its tail and kept looking on them. Heracles and Gwen stood side by side facing to the cobra, held their sword and shield tightly in their hands.

Aunt Calliope descended. Lily caught on her and laid her head on her thigh. Aunt Calliope’s body turned red quickly and she started twitching. “Mom – mom – Don’t frighten me. Tell me that you okay please.” Lily cried. His eyes fell of tear. Amelinda though wanted to break in cry at one, she forced herself calm. She raised her scapter, she cried “Ap-po-to-xi...”

“Stop. Don’t do it Amelinda. It won’t work.” said Aunt Calliope preventing her. Amelinda lowered her scepter down. Her eyes turned red and tears flowed. She kept herself from crying out loud and hurt Lily more.

“It’s okay my daughter.” said Aunt Calliope by a trembling voice, looking on Lily’s face still the warm eyes. “Anyway, I have to go. I have used so much of my life. Just a little earlier.” she continued, raised his hand up touching on her cheek, “It’s okay.” she added, smiling warmly then hand fell down. Amelinda burst in cry. “Mom-” called Lily soullessly. Her eyes turned dry. No tear appeared in her eyes. “Mom” she called again. Aunt Calliope was silent. “Mom.” she called loudly. Amelinda cried louder. Heracles and Gwen trembled. “Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.” Lily creamed up, facing to the ceiling. The air around her was bent at one. Hairs fluttered then change into snakes wiggling on her head. Blue scales appeared on her beautiful face. Amelinda dropped her jaw open looking on her. “Shut your eyes up, all of you.” Lily roared. Amelinda, Gwen and Heracles closed their eyes at one. Lily’s eyes turned red at one. She released her mother down, straightened her back. Still bowed her head down, she slowly turned back. The snakes aggressive threw themselves forward snapped air. Lily slowly raised head up. Her eyes were completely red. “Graooooooooo!” she roared, showing sharp teeth and looking straight to the cobra’s eyes. Hundred snakes on her head stretched forward, opened mouths largely and all looked into their enemy’s eyes. Cracked noises came out. The cobra’s head was petrified. It spread to the neck, stomach then the tail then all the cobras was petrified. It turned silence in minutes. Heracles felt worried so he opened his eyes ajar. Lily still stood there. From her back he saw her hairs had been back to normal. It was smooth neatly on her back. On other hand, the giant cobra had turned a stone statue staying facing to her. “Lily,” he called softly. She didn’t answer so he stepped forward. When he came, he was a little stunned. On her beautiful face was full of tears. She was crying. “Heracles, mom – mom,” she sobbed. Heracles didnt say any thing. Hekept silent, approached her and hugged her. Lily kept crying.

Aunt Calliope by some way woke up and the person she found first was Lily. “Lily.” she called.

“Lily.” immediately Amelinda called, “Aunt Calliope need to see you.”

Lily left Heracles’s embrace at one, rushed into Aunt Caliope. She sat down, grabbed on her hand. “Mom” she cried.

“Don’t cry.” said Aunt Calliope, “We all have to die. It’s only sooner or later. When I died, get out from here. Let follow them. The world outside is more beautiful than all here and you deserve to see it.”

“I will follow your words, mom.” said Lily.

“This is probably the last thing i can do for you.” said Aunt Calliope. She smiled. Flecks of light flew out from her body. They moved and surrounded Lily. Then merged together. A thin layer of light surrounds her. It vaguely took the form of Aunt Calliope. Lily’s body has a transformation. Her long and large tail got shortened and turned into a pair of legs. Her magic blue eyes change color to black. She has transformed and looks like a normal girl. The light surrounding her dispeared. Lily staggered trying to get used to her feet.

“What’s going on? Why did you make me like this?” asked Lily.

“In the outside world, your appearance will not be liked. Therefore, I make you like everyone else. It’s the last thing I could do for you.” said Aunt Calliope.

Tears flowed more. “Thank you, mom.” said Lily. Aunt Calliope looked warmly. “Don’t cry, daughter.” she said. Lily wiped tears. Aunt Calliope smiled. She turned to Amelinda. “There’s one thing I want to give you. A note book that records all the knowledge I have acquired in my life. You are the smartest girl I have ever met and you also have a big, kind and brave heart. Please accept it as a gift.” she said, took out a notebook, gave to her.

“Thank you Aunt Calliope.” said Amelinda, received it.

Aunt Calliope smiled. She turned and looked at them all at one. “Maybe, the best thing in my life is meeting you.” she said. Then she slowly closed her eyes as gently as she sleeped. Though no one talked to the other, all they knew she had died.

The last basket of orange was taken away. The men also vanished with the oranges. There were only children with Heracles, Gwen, Lily and Amelinda. They kept staying around the cart playing and talking. Lily and Gwen enjoyed participating with the children while Heracles and Amelinda seemed to be more silent.  “Agassi, come here and join with us.” called Gwen. “What do you want Peres?” Heracles said loudly. “Come here.” Gwen called again. Heracles left the cart, stepped toward Gwen. There some children were gathering around him. “What do you need Gwen?” Heracles asked. “We are playing a game. Don’t you want to join with us?” said Gwen. “What’s this?” asked Heracles. “Brother Agassi, don’t you see it?” said Gwen. He pointed to straight bamboos. Heracles looked. There had three high straight bamboos standing side by side. The bamboos were about two hundreds of yards away from their places. The middle bamboo was the highest. It’s about one hundred and fifty feet high Heracles guessed. The
